Course Overview

This Digital Photogaphy Course is a complete course in photography, much the same as you would get in credited college course as an enrolled student. In fact, a lot of the lessons we study are taken from the college course materials I presently use in my classes at Lambuth University in Jackson Tennessee. I've developed this course of study to assist and teach students in a more relaxed and enjoyable "one on one" environment, where you can do and learn the same information from home.

This Digital Photography Course is delivered to you in “Segments”- lessons, portions, chapters, or however you want to look at it. The point is that you don't need a giant complicated textbook or manual and I won't overwhelm you with too much information at one time. This information is divided up into an easy to read and understand format that covers the entire course in a very carefully organized manner. You'll receive "lesson ONE" right after you enroll and won't receive lesson two until the first lesson is covered and passed.

As a student you will find our system something that actually assists you through the learning process. We have carefully prepared all the individual lessons in a way that makes it easier to understand and grasp, regardless of your present level of expertise. If you’re a beginner, this course will be great for you. If you’re a pro-amateur photographer this course is perfect for you also. Some of the lessons may be different for each level student, but the same information is covered in both.

You’ll be given assignments that will show and demonstrate to the instructor that you have learned and can apply each of the photographic lessons presented. Once you and the instructor feel you are ready to move on to the next segment we do so. There are no time limits or time restrictions on the length of time you might need to accomplish each of the lessons. Also, you only pay for the lesson you are currently working, not future ones. In fact, to eliminate confusion the instructor will not even show you the next lessons until you’ve passed the one you are presently working with.

This system has proven to be nearly “fail-safe” for students. Photography can be complicated and confusing if too much information is presented at once. If you don’t believe that then read a photography book sometime and see how far you get. Oh wait, you've already done that I bet, and they don't usually get you too far.

Frequently Asked Questions-

"What if it takes me a long, long time to learn this stuff?"

"What if I have to do assignments over and over to get them right?"

"What if I don't have a professional camera right now?"

"What if my computer skills are terrible?"

The answer to all of these questions is simple. This class is designed from the beginning with all of these types of obstacles factored in. I've been teaching for a long time and know the shortcomings of learning photogaphy. Rest assured that your specific question has already been answered and figured in to this program. By keeping our learning experience in a "one on one" situation any and all questions will be handled easily. We can easily slow down and cover things that you specifically need more time to understand. You will learn all of the information regardless of your learning pace.

Our Photography Classes when studied online are customized to each persons goal, not mine. There are some basic areas of photogaphy we will study - understanding the camera, exposure, technique, and so on. However, our goal with this program is to reach your goal in achievement.

People have different plans and different things they specifically want to be able to accomplish. The end result of this program will be to show you how to reach your own levels of expertise and knowledge.

Photography can be a complicated, hard to understand field when approached wrong. Being able to do things correctly and in the proper order is ultimately important. We will apply my 25 years of "on the job training" as a professional photographer and teacher to our sessions. We'll learn the things a "pro" does when given an assignment. We'll study the elements of producing a peice of art and not a bunch of useless photographs when we shoot.

If you are a hobbyist and simply want to take a few lessons to learn more about your camera and ultimately shoot better photos then this course of study is the right one for you.

If this sounds like what you are looking for drop me an email or call and we'll go over more of the details.

Listed below is some information and details about the Online Digital Photography Course.

Topics of study can include:

Scenics, Landscapes, Architecutre, Portraiture & People, Studio Lighting, Vacation Photography, Nature, Fine Art

Many students go on to actually having a small photo business as a side income with my assistance. There is nothing more rewarding than doing something you love and making a little money doing it.

Overview:
This course in Digital Photography is designed to develop your skills in pixel based photographic design. Film-less photography and printing has finally become an affordable reality. Cameras, inks, and paper have evolved to a level that rival traditional continuous tone photographic quality. Digital based photography offers many of the powerful controls used by photographic artists of the past and many newer ones that were never available to them. Adobe Photoshop has become the “do-all / end-all” for digital artists. We will cover this program as we size, retouch, and output photographs.

Course Goals:

1. To become proficient at using your camera.
2. To be able to create images in your camera that you can see in your own mind.
3. Understand your equipment completely, its uses and applications.
4. To be able to control the different lighting situations we are faced with in everyday life as a photographer.
5. Understand the basics of Photoshop and how it is an essential tool to the photographic artist.

Assignments:
Each segment of this course includes assignments. Students will be expected to complete all of them in a timely manner to the level of competence prescribed by the instructor. Since assignments are the true scale of learning in an online class a great deal of importance is placed on them. They must be completed in the specific manner as explained and illustrated in this course of study.

Evaluations:
Student performance will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
Participation will count as 30% of your grade. I will be looking for evidence in discussion through emails and phone conversations of your understanding of the issues, concepts, and techniques addressed. You must demonstrate active individual participation in these communications and activities so that we are convinced you have read and studied the assigned material. Assignments will count as 70% of your grade. You will be given various assignments and projects. Specific evaluation criteria will be explained with each assignment. Extra Credit points can be generated at any time. If you have an idea for an extra credit project, give it to me in writing (email) and I’ll discuss it with you before approval. I have different projects I can suggest to you also.

Grading Scale:

Remarks from your Instructor – Jeff Roush

It seems that although digital cameras are getting easier to use people are finding out that cameras do not take photographs, people do. Just because you have the newest and greatest camera it does not make your photographs any better in most cases. Certainly a new / better tool will give you higher quality results digitally, but artistically some feel they still lack the knowledge to get better. Actually, this is a common problem among many amateur photographers, something we’ll address here through this course of study together. Understanding the theory that the photographer is the artist, not the camera, and that this tool is useless without the vision and creativity of the artist is ultimately important.

The eyes and mind of the artist are the soul to creation.
Without them, nothing is created.
The tools of the artist are the extension of his vision.

All forms of art in many ways are the same process creatively. Photographers, however, seem to think we can circumvent the creative process and just shoot image after image. Certainly the law of averages will give us one good image out of 50, or out of 100, or 500 photographs.
Logical? Hardly.

As we learn more and more we’ll realize just how much truth there is in the above statement. The camera is merely a tool, nothing more. Our ability to control and manipulate this tool directly affects everything in our photography, and the lack of control shows accordingly.

What truly makes one photographer better than another?

Does a camera really make that big of a difference in the bigger scope of things?

Any $1000.00 digital camera in the hands of an artist that has total control of the craft of photography will produce images that are very similar to the ones he/she may produce with their own $5000.00 digital camera. Why? Magic? Certainly not!

In this course of study one of your primary goals is to take control, total control of our tool, the camera. Understanding the intricacies of all those settings most of us avoid is one hurdle we must jump before we can truly unleash the artist inside all of us.

How This Course Works

When you enroll in this program you and I will exchange information to educate me on your knowledge, your ability, you goals, and your equipment. This education program will be delivered to you in “segments”, each to be completed before we move to the next. You pay for your segments (course materials and assignments) as you progress. It’s not necessary to pay for the entire program up front.

There are no time limits or restrictions on how fast you should complete each segment of the program. It’s designed to be completed at your pace, not mine. Most students historically take 3 to 7 weeks for each segment, but this isn’t a requirement by any means. Our collaborative goal is to make sure you learn the techniques and lessons before you move on.

My personal goal is to see that you advance, both in technique and in artistic expression. The camera is a great tool to the artist. My objective is to help you release your artistic vision and creativity through your camera.

Workshops / Seminars

Two times each year our online students will be invited to a two day intense photographic workshop in the photographers’ studio in West Tennessee. This workshop is a “hands-on” studio and location workshop where you will be able to sit along with Jeff and watch, learn, and listen while you both shoot. There is no better learning than to be able to sit and chat with someone in a situation like this.
This workshop covers studio lighting, outdoor lighting, light control and a lot of the “tricks of the trade” secrets that will assist you in creating award winning images. One other element that makes this workshop program unique is the quality of the photographers you’ll be involved with for the two day program. Many pro’s from around the country come to these workshops to study with Jeff for this two day photographic forum.

“There was nothing like sitting with Jeff while on location shooting Scenics and be able to actually pass my camera on to him for critique. I learned more that two days than I’ll probably ever truly know. He’s a great source of information and an excellent teacher.”
~ Susan M / Columbus, OH

"Photographic Workshops for the serious photographer are hard to find, without paying a fortune, or traveling for days. Finally there is a workshop program designed for colleges, photographic clubs, or just anyone that make it easy to learn and experience top-notch techniques from a seasoned pro.
You won't be disappointed when you leave. Regardless of your ability you'll leave this workshop with new and useful information you can apply to your photography endeavors that afternoon. All I know is that he got me excited about taking pictures again."
~ James M / Las Vegas NV

About Your Instructor -

written by Michael Rafael - Los Angeles, CA

Mr. Jeff Roush has run a successful, high level, commercial photography studio in the United States since the early 1980’s. His client base reads like a “who’s-who” in advertising. To view his work and read more about his career please visit http://www.roushstudios.com

Contributing to this success has been his ability to truly understand the craft of photography and apply it to every photographic situation that arises. In the developing of these online photography classes he relied on his years of teaching, both privately and at the college level to truly understand the way this material should to be presented to the student. As complicated as digital photography can be he has managed to properly present this material in the proper way educationally.

Realistically, the best photography learning program if not offered in an understandably effective forum is a waste of time and money. Photography, when you strive for excellence and perfection can be difficult if not approached and delivered correctly.

The courses of study that he has developed are the result of many years of working with amateur, pro-amateur, and student photographers across the country. To him a student’s failure is either the fault of the instructor or the program itself. Online photography courses are typically bland, expensive, and usually do not focus you enough on the education you need. A properly organinzed course should put you in a place where you feel like you have someone directly watching and working with you in perfect unison.

In these courses all of your emails, all of your questions, all of your assignments, and all of your phone conversations will be with Jeff, not someone assigned to do it that day.

He firmly believes in sharing his ideas, his creativity, his theories, and his talent with everyone. Photography is a learning experience that never ends. We’re never done moving up to the next level of creativity in this art; we’ll always be learning, creating, and producing better images.

Good luck with the program!

Michael
